Learn How to Author

Hello, Rebel, and welcome back to my life.

I was planning to talk about narcissism today, but we’re gonna have to put a pin in that, because instead I want to have a little talk about Patreon.

As you know—or probably know—or should know, especially if you’ve been around a little while—I have a Patreon page where if you want to, you can support my YouTubing.

That Patreon is primarily for YouTube. My writing supports itself and then some, but YouTube doesn’t—or it wouldn’t, if it weren’t for Patreon.

However, the Patreon doesn’t really grow to the same degree that this channel does. I have almost three times as many subscribers as I did when I opened my Patreon, but about the same level of patron support.

This bothers me. Not because I’m like, “Pay me, you plebs!” But because if more people aren’t inclined to become patrons, I’m probably not doing enough FOR my patrons.

Which is a tremendous testament to the people who HAVE been and CONTINUE to be patrons. For the most part, they’re pretty much just supporting me because they like the channel. Which—thank you to them. Or you. If you are one.

So I’ve decided to switch some things up on the Patreon. One, because I want to do better for the people who ARE patrons,

and two, because I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to grow my Patreon support by maybe enticing someone like you to become a patron, if you aren’t already.

So here’s the deal. Patrons who support me for five dollars or more per month already get every book I publish, BEFORE I publish it.

I send them new books anywhere from a week to a month before publishing, depending on how well I’m managing my schedule.

I have decided to add to that reward level, and so now, patrons who contribute five dollars or more will ALSO get the RETURN of my Writer Wednesday videos.

I thought long and hard about this one (hashtag long and hard) and had some initial reservations, but I really do think this is the best way to bring back Writer Wednesday.

First off, yes, let’s call this what it is: I’m putting some content behind a paywall, which was my first big reservation.

But the Writer Wednesday videos are the most time-intensive content I’ve ever produced. They just take longer to make than normal videos.

And even though they took longer, I still didn’t feel they were up to the quality I wanted them to be, but I didn’t want to spend even MORE time to make them better, because it was just so much time already.

So by making Writer Wednesday videos for my five dollar patrons, I can make them as good as I’ve always wanted, and that time investment is fully justified, because it’s literally being paid for.

The second reason I’m doing this is that most of the people who regularly watched my Writer Wednesday videos and commented on them and cared about them—are already patrons. Most of them higher than five dollars.

They are primarily writers, and I don’t know this for sure, but they probably became patrons BECAUSE of my writing content.

I stopped Writer Wednesday because I couldn’t commit the time to it, but that primarily impacted the people who cared the most about it and were willing to pay for that time.

Finally, I actually LIKE sharing advice on writing. I myself have received a lot of advice over the years—some of it free, some of it VERY expensive.

I like sharing my own experiences with writing and publishing and “making it” as an indie author, but I’ve struggled with how best to DO that.

We all know I’m a terrible podcaster, I don’t blog, and the idea of putting together a course in a market that’s just SATURATED with courses on how to make it as an indie author … just no. I’m not going to do it.

But this can be my thing. YouTube is my favorite platform to talk to people anyways. And with this structure for Writer Wednesday, I can give more of a mentorship experience, which is what I really want to do.

I can take your questions and answer them specifically, addressing the actual needs of YOU, the viewer of my content, not some nebulous mass out there who just want the same tired advice everyone gives.

So in summary, Writer Wednesdays are coming back, and you can find them on my Patreon. If you’re a patron already, you can expect the next video on Wednesday, November 8th.

If you’re not a patron and you WANT to be part of Writer Wednesday, click the Patreon link in the description or that pretty orange button right over there.

Thank you for watching, Rebel. I hope you enjoy the videos. I’m excited to be making them again. Do the usual stuff, comment, like, subscribe if you’re new. I will see my patrons tomorrow, and the rest of you on Monday. Byyye!
