May I Have Your Attention Please?

May I Have Your Attention Please?

Good morning, Rebels, and welcome back to my life. May I have your attention, please? If you’re reading this, that means that for these brief moments, these eight hundred words or less, I have your attention. But odds are pretty good I don’t have your undivided attention. Many of you are probably checking your phones while you watch this. Or else you’re checking your computer screens while you read this on your phones. And if you weren’t doing that before, mentioning it makes you about three times more likely to do so. I wonder how much more likely you are to do so when I tell you you’re statistically more likely to do so? I fell like this is a rabbit hole that could lead to madness. So I’ve never told you this before, but I write books for a living. (I’ve told you that before. Too often. You’re probably sick of it). But as much attention as I am able to gain from you to read this blog post — five, ten minutes out of your day, five days a week. Most times. Not most times. Sometimes. Lots of times it’s days or weeks between posts. BUT WHATEVER that time investment you’re willing to give my blogs or YouTube videos … books are a whole ‘nother ball game. Reading a book is a time commitment like no other. And that’s why so many new authors struggle to make it. Why would you invest twelve hours reading a book when you’ve never even heard of the author before? The only reason you might is if someone you trust tells you,...
What Depression Means to Me

What Depression Means to Me

Good morning, Rebels, and welcome back to my life. I’m wearing my serious face today. We lost Robin Williams yesterday, and if this is the first you’ve heard about it, I’m really sorry to be the one who told you. At 63 years, Williams had a fairly long life, and certainly one well-lived. As Kevin Smith would say, a big bucket of win for such incredible accomplishments over the decades. Certainly he had longer on this Earth than many artists who passed before their time. But still, we can’t help but think of all the years he could have had left and what he still could have done. His biggest influence on me personally would have to have been as the Genie in Aladdin, a movie I watched about a gajillion times. But I was also obsessed with Hook, and Mrs. Doubtfire, and … damn, a whole lot of his movies, actually. But I am only one of millions, maybe tens or even hundreds of millions for whom he was a huge influence. From my dad’s generation who identified so closely with Good Morning Vietnam, to the new generation who love him in the Night at the Museum franchise (one of those golden movie series that I can watch with my kids and actually enjoy). From everything we’ve heard so far, Williams took his own life and spent much of his final days battling depression. As always, there’s not much to say about this except, “That fucking sucks.” We don’t know what he was on, if anything, whether it was one of the black-box drugs or something else, or nothing. He, of course, was open...
BIG CHANGES COMING

BIG CHANGES COMING

Some things gon’ be changing ’round here. Well, mainly just two. BLOG POSTS I’m going to try blogging on a somewhat more regular basis. I’m going for weekly. Before, I went for weekly. It went great! So great, in fact, that I increased my output to three times a week. That worked less than well. Soon I ran out of content, and then it felt like a major effort to keep blogging, and soon I fell out of the habit. Well, I’m trying it again. I’ve got a LOT of thoughts and considerations going into the new Nightblade series (have you read that, by the way? Did you know the first episode’s free, and the rest are only $0.99? And you can get it right here?) Anyway, I want to blog about these thoughts. I think they’re good thoughts. I think they might even be important thoughts to some people. So I will be blogging, and I will be posting those articles whenever I damn well feel like it. Maybe it’ll be three times a week. Maybe it’ll be less. Maybe it will be more. But it will…be. One thing that will help TREMENDOUSLY with the blogging is knowing what YOU want me to talk about. So please, leave ideas and suggestions, or reach out to me through the contact form. It’s hard to sit here and try to envision what I think you’ll be interested in. I’ve always worked best when YOU guys reach out to me and say, “Hey, what’s your thoughts on this?” My immediate response is, “Oh, WOW, I have so many of them,” and 2,000 words...
Obsessive Fan Mobbing: A PSA

Obsessive Fan Mobbing: A PSA

Now that VidCon’s wrapped up and I’m back home, I wanted to give a quick talk on the topic of obsessive fan mobbing—the only thing that marred the VidCon experience for me, as well as some others I spoke to. There’s no reason for it. It doesn’t increase your own enjoyment of the event, and it can downright terrify your favorite YouTubers. Here’s my breakdown of what happened and how to prevent...
